Anthony Brookes is Professor of Genomics and Health Data Science at the University of Leicester. He is an Associate Director of the Midlands region HDR-UK Substantive Site and also serves as a member of the Midlands Health Data Strategy Board. His research interests relate to ensuring health-related data can be used and reused in optimal and responsible ways. Previously, he created the world’s largest open access Genome Wide Association Study database (GWAS Central), and co-founded both the Human Variome Project and the Human Genome Variation Society (with Board and Vice-President roles respectively).
His current research involves leading international data standards initiatives (‘Beacon’ discovery API in GA4GH, and ‘DUC/CCE’ data models for consent and use conditions with IRDiRC/BBMRI), providing ‘Cafe Variome’ technology to support federated discovery networks, and co-leading with Gates Ventures on the creation of a full-stack data discovery and analysis platform. Most of this work is developed and applied in the context of rare disease and neurodegeneration disorders, and undertaken as part of large international consortia.
