Keeping people with dementia healthier at home through smart technology

Happy senior woman with her adult daughter at home

Institute’s Care Research & Technology Centre, is developing a new way to help people living with dementia (PLWD) stay safe and well in their own homes.

Minder uses discreet, in-home digital sensors and artificial intelligence to track signs of illness or risk such as changes in movement, sleep, vital signs, and environment. This data is analysed in real time and can alert healthcare teams to early warning signs of problems like infections, agitation or malnutrition—so they can step in before a crisis occurs.

This proposal, supported by LifeArc, aims to complete the development of Minder into a medically approved product and trial its use within the NHS. The plan includes:

  • Creating predictive tools to identify people most at risk
  • Linking Minder with NHS health records and care teams
  • Testing Minder’s impact on reducing hospital visits and improving quality of life

The ultimate goal is to show that Minder can enable a more proactive, personalised approach to dementia care, reducing stress for carers and avoiding hospital admissions, by delivering the right care at the right time in people’s homes.
