Brian Walker is Professor of Medicine and strategic advisor for Newcastle University and was previously Deputy Vice Chancellor at Newcastle and Head of the BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science in Edinburgh. He is an Endocrinologist whose research targeted steroid hormone signalling in cardiovascular disease and developed a safer approach to steroid replacement in patients with rare adrenal disease.
Amongst many national and international advisory roles he has experience as a founder, consultant and NED for life sciences/pharma companies, as Trustee for British Heart Foundation, one of the UK’s largest medical charities, and as chair of numerous research evaluation panels, including during a 4-year secondment to the UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC). As Chair of the MRC’s Population & Systems Medicine Board, Brian was instrumental in developing the MRC/NIHR joint funding call for the Rare Disease Research UK platform. He also chairs the UK Rare Diseases Research Landscape Steering Group for the Department of Health & Social Care.
