Stephen is an experienced and versatile leader of research policy, strategy and funding in the biosciences. After serving as BBSRC Deputy CEO, where his role included the  development of  global public/private partnerships and collaborative research consortia programmes, he moved to Canada in 2018 to become Chief Executive (Interim) of the Global Institute for Food Security in Saskatoon, Canada.

His previous roles within BBSRC, included Chief Operating Officer and Director of Finance and Administration. He has served on various boards, including research institutes, campus companies, charities and small business.

Stephen was awarded a CBE for services to the Support of Scientific Research in 2013. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) in 2014. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA) and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (CFIIA).
