Job Title:  Scientist, Medicinal Chemistry
Location:  Stevenage
Job Type: Permanent

Are you passionate about making life science life changing and delivering impact for patients? We want to hear from you.

About the role:

As a self-funded medical research charity, we collaborate with others already working in those areas to create better diagnostics and treatments by providing investment, expert scientific support and commercialisation advice.

We have identified areas with under-served healthcare needs – motor neuron disease, chronic respiratory infection, global health, rare disease, and childhood cancer – where our expertise in translational science can help the most. We call these ‘Translational Challenges’.

The Chemical Biology group at LifeArc focuses on building platforms and driving projects aligned with LifeArc’s ambitious Translational Challenges to benefit patients and to make life science life changing.

As a medicinal chemist within LifeArc’s Chemical Biology group, you will be responsible for delivering on small molecule drug discovery projects aligned to LifeArc’s strategy. In this role you will work within a cross-disciplinary team with a wealth of experience in the pre-clinical phase of drug discovery and development.

This is a lab-based role and candidates will be expected to:

  • Independently conduct research and experiments for projects
  • Analyse & interpret the data and present results/conclusions to line manager/project leader and wider project team. Supporting the design, development and synthesis of compound series for hit and lead discovery and optimisation for LifeArc projects.
  • Supporting the design, development and synthesis of compounds that are focused on exploring novel chemical modalities for projects involving differentiated pharmacological intervention or chemical biology.

About you:

The ideal candidate will also have some broader experience in areas which can contribute across our platform teams and translational challenges. Experience in the fields of AMR, neurodegenerative diseases or targeted protein degradation and of working flexibly as part of a matrix environment would be useful but are not essential.

You will be responsible for:

  • Conducting research in assigned area of chemical synthesis.
  • Designing synthetic routes, based on experience, and assessing and implementing modifications to known methodologies, as necessary.
  • Summarising and correctly interpreting and responding to raw experimental and analytical data.
  • Solving routine synthetic problems and developing solutions.
  • Demonstrating and maintaining knowledge in own area of expertise and of synthetic chemistry applying this to the successful execution of experiments
  • Providing verbal and written reports/presentations internally when required.
  • Maintaining laboratory notebooks and other data to company standards.
  • Performing all work demonstrating due care and attention to all internal processes and procedures including health & safety and COSHH regulations

Education & experience required:

PhD in synthetic organic or medicinal chemistry, or a Master’s degree in Chemistry or related discipline with a strong synthetic organic chemistry component plus equivalent industrial experience.

Some recent experience of chemical synthesis in an industrial setting (preferable).
